Short answer

To add a testimonial widget to Shopify without an app, copy your VideoTestimonials embed code, then in your Shopify admin go to Online Store, click Edit theme, add a Custom Liquid section (or a Custom Liquid block in the product template) and paste the code. Click Save and the widget shows video and text testimonials on that page. It works with any theme that offers Custom Liquid.

Where to put testimonials on Shopify

Homepage section

A row of video testimonials below your hero or above the footer, seen by every new visitor.

  1. In VideoTestimonials, open Studio → Widgets, open (or create) a widget, and copy the code from its Code tab (HTML / Script) — a Carousel or Marquee suits a homepage row.
  2. From your Shopify admin, go to Online Store.
  3. Find the theme that you want to edit, and then click Edit theme. Your home page loads by default.
  4. In the sidebar, click Add section, then use the Search sections field to find Custom Liquid and select it.
  5. Paste the embed code into the Custom Liquid field.
  6. Optional: hover over the section name and drag it to where you want it, for example below the hero.
  7. Click Save.

The sections available depend on your theme and theme version. If Custom Liquid isn't listed, check your theme's documentation.

Product page block

Testimonials next to Add to cart, where the buying decision happens. Applies to every product that uses the template.

  1. In VideoTestimonials, open Studio → Widgets, open (or create) a widget, and copy the code from its Code tab (HTML / Script).
  2. From your Shopify admin, go to Online Store, find your theme and click Edit theme.
  3. Use the template selector in the top bar to open a product page.
  4. In the sidebar, find the Product information section.
  5. Click Add block and select Custom Liquid from the list of available blocks.
  6. Paste the embed code into the Custom Liquid field.
  7. Drag the block to where you want it — for example, below the Buy buttons block.
  8. Click Save.

A change to the product template appears on every product that uses it. To show different testimonials on one product, create a second product template (Home page drop-down → Products → Create template, based on your default product template), add a widget with hand-picked testimonials to it, and assign it to that product in Products → Theme template.

A dedicated Wall of Love page

A full page of reviews and testimonials, linked from your menu — the page shoppers open when they want more proof.

  1. In VideoTestimonials, open Studio → Walls of Love, open your wall, click the share icon and copy the Embed Code (or copy a Grid widget's code).
  2. In the theme editor, click the Home page drop-down menu, select Pages, and then click Create template.
  3. In the Create a template dialog, enter a name such as testimonials, choose your default page template in Based on, and click Create template.
  4. In the new template, click Add section, select Custom Liquid, paste the embed code and click Save.
  5. In your Shopify admin, go to Online Store → Pages, click Add page and enter a title such as Reviews or Wall of Love.
  6. In the Online store section, click the Theme template drop-down menu, select your testimonials template, and click Save.
  7. To add the page to your navigation, go to Content → Menus, open your main menu, click Add menu item, choose Pages and select the new page, then save the menu.

A Wall of Love embed is an iframe with a fixed height — raise the height value in the code if your wall is long. It is also a hosted page, so you can link to it instead of embedding it.

Good to know before you start

  • Custom Liquid sections and blocks depend on your theme. Shopify notes that not all themes support Custom Liquid blocks; without them, the code has to be added by editing the theme code.
  • Editing a template changes every page that uses it, so a widget in the default product template appears on every product.
  • Each Shopify template can have up to 25 sections.
  • VideoTestimonials is added with embed code, not installed from the Shopify App Store, so it doesn't read your orders or send post-purchase review requests. For order-based product reviews, use a Shopify review app — compared below.

Shopify testimonials: frequently asked questions

Do I need a Shopify app to add testimonials to my store?

No. You paste the embed code into a Custom Liquid section or block in Shopify's theme editor, so nothing is installed in your store. Deleting the section removes it.

Where should testimonials go on a Shopify store?

Product pages first, next to the Add to cart button, because that is where shoppers decide. Then the homepage, for first-time visitors, and a dedicated reviews page linked from your menu. The three recipes on this page cover each placement.

Can I show different testimonials on different products?

Yes. Create a second product template in the theme editor, add a widget with hand-picked testimonials to it, and assign that template to the product under Products → Theme template. Products keep their own template, so each can show its own widget.

Does it work with my Shopify theme?

It works with any theme that offers a Custom Liquid section or block, which Shopify's own themes do. If yours doesn't, the code can go into the theme's code instead (Online Store → the theme's … menu → Edit code).

Will a testimonial widget slow down my Shopify store?

The widget is one script tag with the async attribute, so the browser keeps rendering your store while it loads, and the testimonials appear once it has.

Can I show my Google or Trustpilot reviews on Shopify?

Yes. Import them into VideoTestimonials, approve the ones you want, and they appear on your Wall of Love. Embed the wall on a Shopify page with a Custom Liquid section, as in the Wall of Love recipe above.

How is this different from Judge.me or Loox?

Judge.me and Loox are Shopify review apps: they email buyers after an order and attach product reviews to products. VideoTestimonials collects video and text testimonials through a link you can send to anyone, records video in the browser, and lets you place it anywhere in your theme. Some stores use a review app for product ratings and VideoTestimonials for video stories.
