How long can a video testimonial be?

Updated

Short answer

VideoTestimonials sets the recording limit per form: Maximum Video Duration in the form's Settings tab defaults to 120 seconds and accepts 10 to 300 seconds, so the longest recording is 5 minutes. The limit is the same on every plan, including Free, applies to camera, screen and audio-only recordings, and counts per question, so a three-question form collects three clips.

Every collection form has its own recording limit. You set it once in the form's settings, and the recorder enforces it for every customer who opens the link.

Change the limit

  1. Go to Dashboard → Forms and click Edit Form on the form you want to change.
  2. Open the Settings tab.
  3. Under Maximum Video Duration, enter the number of seconds, from 10 to 300.
  4. Click Save Changes.

Shorter limits produce tighter testimonials. Two minutes suits most forms; raise it toward five minutes only when you want a longer, interview-style answer.

What the customer sees

  • Before recording, the recorder shows the limit, for example "Max duration: 2:00".
  • While recording, the timer shows the limit, then turns into a countdown ("30s left") for the last quarter of the limit, capped at 30 seconds, and turns urgent in the final seconds.
  • At the limit, recording stops automatically. The customer watches the clip, then keeps it or presses Re-record to try again.

The same limit applies whichever mode the customer picks: Camera, Audio Only, or Screen (desktop only, and only when your plan includes screen recording).

Several questions, several clips

Each question on a form is its own step. In video mode the customer records one clip per question, and each clip can run up to the form's limit. A form with three questions and a 2-minute limit can therefore collect up to six minutes of video from one person.

Videos you upload yourself

The limit only applies to recordings made through the form. If a customer sends you a finished video, add it in Dashboard → Import → Manual on the Video testimonial tab (MP4, MOV, AVI, MKV or WebM). To shorten it, use trimming in Video Studio, which needs the Starter plan or above.

How other tools compare

Recording limits as other testimonial tools publish them on their pricing pages (checked between 24 September and 3 October 2026):

Frequently asked questions

What is the default recording limit?

Two minutes. New forms start with a Maximum Video Duration of 120 seconds. Change it in the form's Settings tab and click Save Changes; the new limit applies to everyone who opens the form link after that.

What happens when a customer reaches the limit?

The recorder shows the limit before recording starts, switches its timer to a countdown near the end (the last 30 seconds with the default limit), and stops automatically at the limit. The customer then watches the clip and either keeps it or records again.

Is there a limit on videos I upload myself?

The form's limit doesn't apply to video files you add in Dashboard → Import → Manual on the Video testimonial tab, which accepts MP4, MOV, AVI, MKV and WebM files. Trim long uploads in Video Studio before you publish them; trimming needs the Starter plan or above.

How long should a video testimonial be?

Long enough for one clear story: the problem, the turning point and the result. For most forms that fits in 60 to 120 seconds. Keep longer limits for case-study style interviews, because a shorter limit makes people get to the point.
